HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is the core material of Longkang plastic construction waste chutes. Compared with traditional materials such as steel, PVC, and PP, HDPE offers comprehensive advantages in performance, cost, and safety. This article analyzes the advantages of HDPE as a construction waste chute material from a materials science perspective.
- What Is HDPE
HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) is a high-crystallinity, non-polar thermoplastic engineering plastic. It is copolymerized from ethylene, with a density of 0.94–0.97 g/cm³ and a molecular weight of 100,000–500,000.
Main characteristics of HDPE:
- Excellent chemical corrosion resistance
- Good low-temperature impact resistance
- Good electrical insulation
- Low water absorption (<0.01%)
- Non-toxic and odorless, meeting food-grade standards
- Recyclable
- Advantages of HDPE for Construction Waste Chutes
- Light weight, easy installation
- HDPE density is only 0.95 g/cm³, one-eighth that of steel
- A 500mm diameter section weighs only about 20kg and can be carried by 2 persons
- No large hoisting equipment required; installation can be done manually
- Installation efficiency is more than double that of steel
- Can work flexibly in narrow spaces
- Good impact toughness
- HDPE retains good toughness at -40℃ and does not become brittle or crack
- Resists cracking from the impact of falling concrete blocks and bricks
- Unlike PVC which is brittle at low temperatures, HDPE has a wide operating temperature range
- Compared with steel, HDPE provides elastic cushioning that reduces impact damage
- Chemical corrosion resistance
- Cement mortar contains alkaline components; HDPE is alkali-resistant
- Does not corrode on contact with cement slurry, lime water, or construction waste leachate
- No anti-corrosion painting required; does not rust
- Service life far longer than steel
- Smooth surface, smooth flow
- HDPE inner wall roughness Ra<3.2μm
- Coefficient of friction 0.2–0.3, enabling fast waste flow
- Mortar-type waste does not easily adhere
- Unlike steel inner walls which wear and become rough, HDPE stays smooth over the long term
- Good noise reduction
- HDPE is inherently elastic and absorbs vibration
- Waste falling noise is 15–20 dB lower than steel
- Noise compliant for urban and nighttime construction
- Fewer complaints from nearby residents
- Good sealing, reduced fugitive dust
- HDPE can be precisely molded with tight connections
- Sealing rings between sections prevent dust leakage
- Unlike steel flange connections which have large gaps, HDPE provides good sealing
- Meets green construction fugitive dust control requirements
- Weather resistance and UV resistance
- Longkang chutes add 2%–3% carbon black or UV stabilizer
- Outdoor service life ≥5 years
- Does not age or become brittle
- Unlike ordinary PVC which easily ages and discolors outdoors
- Recyclable
- HDPE is an eco-friendly material and can be 100% recycled
- Can be recycled and regenerated after retirement without polluting the environment
- Meets green building and sustainable development requirements
- Unlike steel recycling which requires smelting, HDPE recycling is simpler

- Limitations of HDPE
- Stiffness is lower than metal: fixing points must be densified for long spans
- Softening at high temperatures: softens above 80℃; cannot be used for high-temperature waste
- UV-sensitive: ages without stabilizers
- Low elastic modulus: impact from large pieces may cause local deformation
Longkang overcomes these limitations through the following measures:
- Increased wall thickness (8–10 mm) for greater stiffness
- Added carbon black and UV stabilizer to improve weather resistance
- Operating temperature controlled to ≤60℃
- Densified fixing points (one every 3–4 m)
